Ghana is located on the West Coast of Africa along the Gulf of Guinea and is bordered by Cote d'Ivoire on the West, Togo on the East and Burkina Faso to the North.
CURRENCY The Ghanaian currency is called Cedi. The units are Cedis and Pesewas. One (1) (¢) = 100 pesewas (p). Bank notes are in the following denominations: ¢100.00, ¢200.00, ¢500.00, ¢1,000.00, ¢2,000.00 and ¢5,000.00. There are also minted coins in the following denominations: ¢5.00, ¢10.00, ¢20.00, ¢50.00, ¢100.00, ¢200 & ¢500. Banks are normally opened from Mondays to Fridays. Mondays - Thursday 8.30 hrs - 14 hours (8.30 a.m - 2.00pm). Fridays 8.30 - 15 hours (8.30am -3.00pm). Banks are however closed officially on Saturdays and Sundays. Few banks operate Cash points. All banks and Forex Bureaus change foreign currencies notably the Pound Sterling, U.S Dollar, Deutsche Marks, Japanese Yen, CFA etc. They also accept travellers cheques and credit cards but most widely accepted are American Express, Diners and Visa cards. Your Credit Card may be used for payment at nearly all Airlines, leading hotels and major supermarkets.
ELECTRICITY The electric voltage in Ghana is 200/240 volts. Electric outlets accept either 2 or 3 pronged plugs or convertors.
WATER Safe and ample treated tap water is available. Bottled mineral water is also available for purchase.
TIME Ghana lies geographically on the Greenwich Meridian and therefore has GMT.
CLIMATE Ghana is situated in the torrid zone and climate - moderate temperatures, constant breeze and clear and abundant sunshine most of the year. Ghana has two rainy seasons. A major rainy season from about late April to early June and a minor season from September to October. Temperatures range between 21 - 32ºC in the South. (Cape Coast included).
TELECOMMUNICATION Telephone calls can be made from any Post Office in the country except in very remote areas. Calls can also be made from telephone booths installed in cities and towns. Telephone calls are paid for by the patron. In case of emergency dial 191 (Police), 192 (Fire) and 193 (Ambulance). Collect calls can be made to the UK and the U.S.A. direct from Ghana. The code number for USA is 0191 while that of UK is 0194. The IDD Code for Ghana is +233. Telegrams, telexes and faxes can be sent and received from Post and Telecommunication Offices and most business centres.
DRIVING Ghana drives on the right and a current international driving licence is required.
CLOTHING Since the climate is warm and tropical all year round, light washable cotton and casual wear is ideal.
TIPPING Tipping is permitted in hotel and other restaurants. It is rarely added to the bill. Whenever it is not added the quality of service should dictate one's generosity to the waiter, taxi driver, porter, guide, et cetera.
PHOTOGRAPHY There are no restricted areas for photography except the airport, Military and other strategic sites such as the Seat of the Government at the Osu Castle. Photographic equipment including video cameras should be declared to Customs on arrival. Films and cameras are available for purchase in the main towns.
